Lot 157: Mercedes-Benz 220S Saloon

Classic - Collectors and Sports Cars, Barons (28 October 2013)

Mercedes unveiled its new six cylinder 220 models in 1959, introducing the second generation of saloons and coupés to use the 220 model designation. Like the previous 220 the new cars had a 2195cc six cylinder engine with choice of either S or SE specifications. The SE model featured fuel injection and from 1962 disc brakes were available. The 220 Saloons shared a similar body with the smaller 'Fintail' models. Unlike the smaller engined cars the 220 came with 'stacked' headlamps either side of the traditional Mercedes grille. Production continued until 1965. The example offered here was imported by its previous owner from Australia, where it had been cherished as a wedding car. Re-commissioned upon arrival, the car was used regularly as a Sunday driver, showcar and occasional wedding car. Whilst driven regularly, completing duties as an everyday commuting car, European tourer and wedding car, it really needs to be cherished again. The car has been equipped with a new headlining, battery and reconditioned seats. A wonderful piece of German engineering, this model encapsulates the famous crash cell technology, which took safety to another level. The model is a relative rarity on today's roads and is becoming a sought after gentleman's carriage and very successful historic rally competitor and winner. The vendor is clearing his collection due to an impending purchase and does not have the time to devote to it and has decided to sell.
