Lot 438: Bentley Turbo R Sports Saloon

The Harrogate Sale, Bonhams (13 November 2013)

Introduced at Geneva in 1985, the Turbo R continued the modern 'Blower Bentley' theme but with the added refinement of suspension better suited to the car's increased performance. Outwardly the R differed from the preceding Mulsanne Turbo by virtue of its cast-alloy wheels shod with low-profile Pirelli tyres, while inside there was a revised fascia with rev-counter included amongst the comprehensive instrumentation. In a break with Rolls-Royce tradition, power figures were made public for the first time, revealing that the engine produced 320bhp and a staggering 475lb/ft of torque, which on the road translated into a 0-60mph time of around 7 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. Described by Autocar as 'an outrageous concoction of sledgehammer performance and sybaritic luxury', the Turbo R remains as formidable now as when it debuted nearly 30 years ago. A fuel-injected 1987 model, this Turbo R has covered circa 89,000 miles from new and been used sparingly since being serviced earlier this year. Described as a smooth, comfortable driver, the car comes with service history from H R Owen, Douglas Daniels, Ghost Motors and others, together with a substantial quantity of expired MoTs supporting the recorded mileage. We are advised that it will have been driven to the sale from London. Offered with the distinctive registration 'D5 RRM', this well documented Turbo R also comes with tool kit, handbooks, current MoT/tax and Swansea V5. An ignition immobiliser and modern CD player are the only notified deviations from factory specification.
