Lot 028: Mercedes-Benz 600 SEC

Classic Vintage Cars & Motorcycles, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (27 November 2013)

Ten years and over $1bn in development time and costs, the W140 Series Mercedes was finally launched in 1991 and introduced innovations such as double-pane window glazing, power-assisted closing for doors and boot lid, electric windows which lowered back down upon encountering an obstruction and a heating system which, if desired, continued to emit warm air after the engine was turned off. For details like this, the W140 is often known as the last Mercedes to be 'over-engineered', a Mercedes trait that was costing the company in product delays and over-budgeting. Available as either a saloon or a coupe, it came with a choice of engines ranging from a 2.8-litre straight-six to a mighty 6-litre V12 which produced 389bhp and 428lb/ft of torque. It remained in production until 1999 having had a minor styling face-lift in 1994. This stunning 600SEC has had just two previous owners. The vendor informs us that everything works, from the soft-close doors to the small chrome rear markers which pop up when reverse is engaged to show the extremeties of the car! It has covered just 42,400 miles from new and comes with a huge file of invoices and 7 old MOTs dating back to 2005. Costing an eye watering 104,000 when delivered, an invoice shows that in 2005, at 32,000 miles it was sold for 14,500. It had new discs and pads at a cost of 500 in 2010 and the tyres are in good condition. It comes with 2 sets of keys with recent new batteries, whilst its fastidious owner, a Mercedes-Benz Owners Club member stripped much of the external trim off the car when purchased so that he could treat the underside with waxoil. He is including an original brochure set and poster with the car which is MOTd until June 2014. He searched high and low to find one that would match his exacting standards and is only parting with it due to a job change and relocation.
