Although almost everyone in the world agrees that Messrs Daimler and Benz built the first cars in 1886, the French are of a different opinion.  They celebrated the 100th anniversary of the car in 1984.  The funny thing is, the French had only found out a few years previously that they had invented the car.  A document from 1884 had come to light in which a Mr Edouard Delamare-Deboutteville described how he had built a car and driven around in it.  and, to make the whole thing a bit more official, he had registered his invention on 12 February 1884 under patent number 160267.  Furthermore, the French claimed that it was not Daimler and Benz who laid the foundation for the automotive industry, but Panhard & Levassor and Peugeot, who had offered cars for sale as early as 1890 and 1891.

The fact is that France was the first country to organise a car race, in 1895.  France aslo organised the world's first car show, in 1898.  Whatever the facts of the matter, several replicas were quickly built of the first car and introduced at all kinds of events.
