The second Mercedes S-Class models appeared in 1972, the 280S and 280SE. These new S-Class saloons were even more imposing than the original car and had a slightly longer wheelbase to improve passenger space. Some of the suspension components were actually shared with the SL sports models which really improved handling, sadly this time there were no Coupe or Cabriolet versions.
The 280 used a 2.8 litre, six cylinder engine mated to either manual or automatic transmission. As before the SE model offered better performance, although both models were rapid by early 70's standards!
The 280S was known as the "Best car of the 70's" The most sought after model out of the saloons are the initial 280S's built between late 1972 and end of 1973. Not many are surviving today and the 280S is a highly collectible motor car now.
