TVR announced a new "family" of small sports coupes in 1967, the Vixen. The next Vixen, the S2, appeared in 1968 quickly followed by the S3 in 1970. In 1972 a further improved Vixen S4 made its debut and remained in production until the arrival of the later "M" range in 1972. All Vixens featured GRP bodies and most were powered by Ford Cortina GT engines.
The S4 model was introduced as a stop-gap model bridging the gap between the Vixen S3 and all new M-series of 1972. The Vixen used a new chassis which would form the basis of the new M-range but retained the earlier Vixen body and mechanical layout (Mk II Cortina GT engine and gearbox).
